Well, isn’t this an interesting time in human history?
Last Wednesday, the first cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in New Mexico. The high school state basketball tournament was in full swing and we had our broadcasters in from all corners of the state to cover the action at the Pit and Santa Ana Star Arena. I was scheduled to work at the Pit Thursday morning when I got a text from my boss in all caps: “DO NOT GO TO THE PIT. COME TO THE OFFICE.”
For two days we coordinated with the Governor’s office and the Activiies Association (host of the basketball tournament) to try to to accomodate broadcasters who were suddenly locked out of the tournament action they were there to cover.
And even then we were thinking, “Oh this will blow over in a week…maybe two.”
Now, as I finish up my first week of quarantine, I realize this is far from over.
